Summertime Fishing
September 8, 2008
Summer is by far my favorite time to fish, even more than spring during the
spawn. Fish are not on just one particular pattern and summer is prime time for
junk fishing ranging from drop shotting in 40 feet of water, to top water
fishing in inches of water. One thing I've learned about summer time fishing is
that a bass can never get too shallow, I've caught some of my biggest bass in
the summer in inches of water. When the blue-gill spawn is occurring you can
have an all day top water feeding frenzy. Finesse fishing can be a dominant
technique in the summer when fish are finicky and will always catch you a few
fish when conditions are tough. Throwing a shaky head is my favorite and most
productive finesse tactic to catch lethargic and inactive bass. Just simply fish
docks preferably with a lot of shade and you are bound to get a few bites.
Second, I like to drop shot, but I'm speaking of true dropshotting, which is
catching bass that are only relating to bait fish and not a solid object such as
a dock. You will have to idle around and constantly stare at your depth finder
to see a large school of shad and bass feeding on them. They can be out in the
middle of nowhere in 40 feet of water, but can usually be found on shoals or any
place with a sudden depth change. I usually throw a Berkley gulp 3 inch minnow
with a 2/0 gamakatsu dropshot hook and a 1/4 dropshot weight with about an 18
inch liter
